‘This multi-media exhibition is the culmination of four years research and experimentation towards my PhD ‘The Perception of Water. Capturing the Sublime Through Abstraction’. My images are a contemplation and a search for something beyond the visible of the everyday. Pursuing a connection and expression to what is often ethereal, ineffable, and sublime. Each image from this aquatic exploration, whether photographic, moving, or microscopic, brings expressive discoveries and insights. Using a combination of contemplative photographic methods and guided by intuition, my creative process is about finding new ways of perceiving and seeing water through photographic abstraction.
My continued experimentation both above and below the surface of water is also about bridging documentary and conceptual approaches to photographic expression, moving from the literal to a more poetic visual expression.
In addition to the photographic image, I have experimented with sound and moving image to create an immersive video installation. Creating an experience for the viewer to discover a new way of appreciating water.
It afforded me opportunity to create an emotive sound piece through the creation of a focus group, involved in cold water swimming where The focus group participated in; ethnographic interviews, providing me with insights into a deeper distinctive human connection with water and the sublime. They were photographed and videoed within the water. Finally, the participants meditated with a vial of water. Using the Drop Evaporation Method I microscopically photographed these samples demonstrating a transformation to the ‘face’ of water. . This method enabled me to extend my individual visual perspective and I discover significant revelations revealed within the water. Through my experiences with the focus group I discovered a profound understanding into the unique human connection with water.’ – Jo Kimmins
