Learn how to make your own relief tiles using a variety of techniques working with clay over 2 Saturdays in Connemara

Kay Aplin was artist in residence at Interface in June this year. She returns to share her knowledge and skills in her field of architectural ceramics. In this course she will teach the techniques she uses in creating her ceramic forms, covering the processes involved in making clay prototypes, using modelling, carving, layering, and surface texture; producing plaster casts and press moulds and how to make clay multiples from moulds. Colour will be applied using underglazes, pigments and glazes.
Kay’s residency involved researching micro-forms of nature found in the Connemara landscape. She will provide reference material gathered during her stay here to use as the starting point for an exciting experience with clay. Participants are welcome to bring their own ideas and reference material to create designs which Kay will demonstrate how to transform into beautiful tiled artworks which can be displayed indoors or out. The tiles will be fired between the first and second workshop.

Kay Aplin graduated in 1995 from Chelsea College of Art, specialising in architectural ceramics. During this time she has had many commissions around the UK and internationally, producing a distinct range of site-specific public realm artworks and large-scale tiled installations. Her work responds to place and her process often involves using a microscope to magnify hidden forms in nature. Exhibitions include Kogei Triennial Kanazawa, Japan, European Ceramic Context, Denmark, British Ceramics Biennial and Collect, Saatchi Gallery, London.
In 2011, Kay founded The Ceramic House in Brighton, an award-winning artist-led gallery, residency and a spectacular showcase of her tiled installations. Since 2016, Kay has been collaborating with sound artist Joseph Young to form a unique curatorial team investigating the intersections between ceramic and sound art practice. They work in partnership with galleries, museums, festivals and heritage sites to produce ambitious multi-faceted projects incorporating exhibitions, residencies, films, publications and performances which extend their reach beyond The Ceramic House and out towards a wider international artistic community. Their residency at Interface is part of their latest project Edges investigating collaborative practice in Ireland, Estonia and the UK.
