Maureen O’Neill was born in Co. Mayo and now lives and works where she grew up. In 2010 she graduated with a BA in Heritage Studies and then a BA Honours in Fine Art from ATU A Mayo/Galway.
As a landscape and contemporary impressionist painter, her work evolves organically, starting with spontaneous abstract depictions and guided by the paint itself. She uses her imagination to create emotional responses to her surroundings, often depicting imagined scenes of bogland, mountainous areas, agricultural relics and coastal landscapes from memory.
My paintings explore the themes of rural isolation and the shifting effects of climate change on the landscape. I am drawn to the physical presence of paint, working with texture, gesture, and carefully chosen color palettes to shape expressive surfaces. By breaking up the canvas through composition and form, I aim to create works that feel both dynamic and contemplative.
Through this process, I seek to evoke a dialogue between the natural world and the inner landscapes of the mind—inviting viewers to experience nature’s beauty, solitude, and capacity for transformation.
