Clare Scott

My current practice could probably be described as eclectic. I work in large scale temporary installation, painting and sculpture with an interest in reusing materials. I have quite a varied background. Having started off in graphic design, I worked in computer and video graphics, moved into theatre and film design while teaching myself painting – primarily in oils – which was my first love. I worked for a number of years creating small scale, photo realistic works before becoming dissatisfied with aspects of the gallery/exhibition system. Returning to college in 2014 my work exploded out into the space. Since then my temporary installation work has begun to find its own rhythm, and I am currently reigniting the painting side of my practice, working on the process of painting, experimenting with acrylics and scaling up. Sculptural concerns have influenced experiments with waste materials and an interest in painting of and on irregular shapes and surfaces as well as repurposing paintings. In this way I am exploring the connections between the diverse parts of my practice. My other work in the art sector which includes installing exhibitions – at GOMA, The Waterford Gallery of Art and Garter Lane Arts Centre – feeds into my practice too. I also write about art and I am regularly commissioned to write for VAIs VAN.
Recent installations include Luftschloss at Somos in Berlin (July 2024) as part of Zeitgeist Irland 24 and Surge at The Mdina Cathedral Biennale, Malta (November 2023). My paintings have been selected for a number of shows, most recently The Lido Open at the Lido Stores Margate, The BEEP Painting Biennale, and Artforms Bucolica at Mount Congreve Gardens. I am a member of the Tups Banana Correspondence Course 2024/2025.
