Dee Deegan is a Galway based multidisciplinary Teaching Artist and founder of Galway Art Academy. Dee’s work is multidisciplinary combining drawing, collage, printmaking, photography, installation, altered book art, bookmaking, furniture design & pattern design. She combines traditional and more modern digital methods to create work. Deeply rooted in personal experience and observation, her earlier work explored themes of transience and memory. More recently, her focus has shifted toward personal identity and belonging. Dee is also expanding her practice into the realm of socially engaged art, reflecting a commitment to community-focused creativity. Recent studies in UCD introduced her to Design Thinking for social impact. Notable community-centred projects include The Eden Engagement Project (2022, International Teaching Artist Collaborative & National Concert Hall) which empowered young people to confront climate change in global contexts, and Messages of Hope (2021), a response to community wellbeing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Her work has received notable recognition, including selection for the Claremorris Open (2012) and invitations to exhibit at Impressions as part of the Galway International Arts Festival (2016 & 2018). Dee holds a Master’s in Creative Practice from ATU and graduated with first-class honours in both her hDip in Art & Design Teacher Education from TUS and her BA in Fine Art from ATU. Awards include UCD & GMIT Scholarships (2016, 2024), Galway City Council Artist Bursary (2013) and Leonardo da Vinci Mobility Programme Bursary (2011).
