James Hatton is a multidisciplinary artist, writer and functional ceramicist. His practice revolves around concepts of acceleration, breakage and the ‘Arrière-Garde’. Video, text, sound and clay form cornerstones of his practice, with percussion as a foundational pillar. His composite works act as vehicles for research, play and theory.
His work with artist-led organisations, universities, and peers aims to assist in the emergence of alternative educational structures and processes outside the institution. This dissemination of information is approached as a quietly radical act. These formally editorial processes lead his practice to interface with emerging curatorial approaches as acts of ‘editorial breakage’ and granular reformation.
His work has been shown widely across the UK, France, Serbia, USA, India and Slovenia, with an upcoming show, Probably A Broken Plate, Wraymour & Flanigan, Brooklyn, New York (Spring 2025). He is supported by The Arts Council of Ireland.
