Brigid Mulligan is a visual artist from county Longford. She studied Sculpture at ATU Galway receiving a BA Hons degree in 2009 and continued her education there graduating from the Master’s in Creative Practice in 2018. Her work examines alternative shrines and questions the role creativity can play in processing grief and loss. Her work has been exhibited in group shows in various Museums and Galleries nationally and internationally. 2022 include a solo exhibition ‘A portrait of a life through belonging’, in Artlink, Fort Dunree Donegal & a dual exhibition with artist Katie Moore ‘It comes in waves’, in the Custom House Ennistimon Co. Clare, ‘Dwell’, An Táin, art centre, Dundalk, ‘Anticipated Nostalgia’, Golden Thread Gallery Belfast & ‘LINES FICTION’, Galerie Körnerpark, Berlin.
She received an Agility Award from the Arts Council of Ireland and a Mobility Award from Culture Moves Europe in 2024. An Arts Participation Bursary from the Arts Council of Ireland, Cavan Studio Award, from Townhall Theatre & Cavan County Council, Artist Support Scheme from Galway County Council in 2023. The Seed Grant from the Irish Hospice Foundation 22/23, the Project Realisation Award Artist in the Community from Create & the arts Council IRE Artist in the community, R&D award with mentoring from Create IRE & the Arts Council, Agility Award from the Arts Council of Ireland & Artist Support Scheme, Galway County Council 2021. Professional Development Award from the Arts Council Ireland 2020, RHA Foundation in drawing scholarship 2020/21.
Residencies include Interface, Inagh, Galway and Fish Factory, Iceland in 2024, Creative Spark Dundalk & two home residency with DAS Studios Belfast 2021/2022. Cill Rialaig, Ballinaskelligs, Kerry, 126 Gallery, Galway and Tyrone Guthrie Bursary, Galway City Council 2019.
‘The Freebirds M.C.C Project’ is currently touring nationwide with events including Backstage Theatre Longford, an Taibhdhearc theatre in Galway city and the Cornmill Theatre, Leitrim. The full collaborative exhibition was exhibited in Pallas Projects & Studios, Dublin in 2023 & Queen Street Studios, Belfast in 2024. ‘The Freebird’s M.C.C Project’ 2022 involved collaborating with her fellow club members the Freebird’s Motorcycle club from Longford focusing on cultural identity in the motorcycling community. Through co-creating a film titled Freebirds, an archival exhibition and sculptural installations the group explored shared histories and the significant loss of three club members due to road traffic accidents.
