Anna Jurkiewicz

Anna Jurkiewicz is a singer, animator and sound artist whose practice is strongly marked by her beliefs and values.
She writes, ‘In music, I study bare human voice, not stylized or amplified with devices, but resonating thanks to natural acoustics. I use field recording, study natural sounds and create landscape-inspired performances. I use the voice to measure the space and expose the qualities of an environment. I create sound projects which combine field recording and vocals to achieve a multi-dimensional, multi-layer sound image of a particular natural space. For me personally, landscape has a strong affective dimension. I thrive and belong in building-free and
machine-free open space. I am a participant observer of various manifestations of the use of landscape by humans. In suburban and urban contexts, forests are an arena of sport-related individual and group practices, such as walking, nordic-walking, running etc. I believe that contemporary communities lack sensitivity to non-visual, sensual aspects of experience and communication.’
During her residency at Interface, she explored the facility as a vocal playground. She engaged the community in a Ukrainian singing workshop and continued her research into funeral singing.
