‘The areas of extensive countryside around the west of Ireland are often referred to as “hinterlands”, a term that loosely translates to “the land behind”. The termd escribes how we perceive these places as remote, yet connected to us. My work depicts these natural spaces and investigates their underlying connections to our sense of time, place and identity. As the world has changed our perceptions of time, place and even ourselves the connection we feel to the land has also changed with it. Urbanization, the depletion of natural resources and the spectre of climate change all affect our perceptions of landscape which in turn reflects changes in ourselves. Yet the call of these wild landscapes at the edge of Europe still evokes something deep within us. My work depicts these changes and these landscapes to come to an understanding of the hinterlands and their connection to us.’
