After studying at Southwark College in London, Bernie began as a visual artist specializing in painting. She continued her studies at ATU, evolving into a multi-disciplined artist using film, print and textiles. Within her practice, she explores a range of techniques, materials, and approaches to process. Her work deals with themes, of mental health, isolation, and displacement and draws on local culture through the Irish language. Bernie has recently researched Irish female emigrants, examining the social, economic, religious, and political reasons why they left Ireland and their survival in their new adoptive countries.
